‘This House Believes Feminism Must Be A Rising Tide To Lift All Ships’ – Cambridge Union Debate

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2017, I was really excited to be invited to take part in Cambridge Union’s debate ‘This House Believes Feminism Must Be A Rising Tide To Lift All Ships’. I spoke for the opposition, which might at first seem like a strange position to argue, but my speech focused on why feminism has to prioritise the needs of the most marginalised when their priorities come into conflict with those of more privileged women. You can watch my contribution in the video below courtesy of the Cambridge Union.

Unfortunately I don’t have the permissions to host the whole debate here which is a real shame as the other speakers – on all sides – were uniformly brilliant and impressive; if you get the chance to read/watch/etc their other work you won’t regret it. Thanks so much to them – Lola Okolosie, Dr Nina Ansary, Baroness Haleh Afshar, Susan Connolly and Shrishti Krishnamoorthy-Cavell – and to all at Cambridge Union for a really interesting and thought-provoking evening.
